“CLAHEC partners with LSUHSC-NEW ORLEANS To Bring Opportunity for Students to see ‘The Life Of A Medical School Student’.”

“A Day with the Doctors” is a collaboration between Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (CLAHEC) and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans (LSUHSC-NO). It is a one-day interactive program that will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at LSUHSC in New Orleans, Louisiana. The day will provide a glimpse into the life of a medical school student. Participants travel to the medical school by coach bus.  They are able to interact one-on-one with second year medical students.   Participants will learn diagnostic skills such as taking blood pressure, listening to breath sounds, identifying heart sounds, and taking a radial pulse.  Students will have the opportunity to look at organ tissue from the liver, brain, lungs, and heart.  The “Day with the Doctors” participants will also get to see the medical school and allied health facilities and learn specifics about medical school admission policies and requirements.

Applicants must be juniors or seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications must include a completed application form, a letter of recommendation, a copy of their transcript, and a personal essay explaining why he/she should be chosen to participate in “A Day with the Doctors” program. Central Louisiana AHEC (Area Health Education Center) will choose fifty students to attend the program from the following parishes:  Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana.

The “Day with the Doctors” program is one of the ways that CLAHEC is working to alleviate the shortages by recruiting students into medical careers early in their educational experience and providing them with the necessary knowledge and tools with which to accomplish their goals.  Other program opportunities:
