The West Feliciana Reading Council recently held the Young Authors Reception on Tuesday, April 24.  The Council was formed with the goal to promote reading and writing for parish-wide students.  The teachers and administrators of West Feliciana Parish constantly strive to find the best materials, techniques, and strategies to meet the demands of teaching students to write well grammatically as well as imaginatively.  Each year the state of Louisiana sponsors a statewide writing contest, and as part of its emphasis on literacy, the West Feliciana Reading Council sponsors the local Young Authors Contest.  Students in grades K – 12 compete in the writing contest by writing works of Poetry, Fiction, and Non-fiction.  All 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners were invited to attend the recent reception.  Each winner was given an anthology entitled “Voices on the River” which contained all the winning writings from the Young Authors contest. All first place writings were sent on to state competition, and this year the West Feliciana Reading Council had thirteen state winners!  The state winners were Wyatt Olsen, Charles Fox-Smith, Karmarah Jackson, Jonah Kennedy, Palmer Lamartiniere, Blythe Buchanan, Nneka Nwabueze, Claire Leming, Jack Stewart, Ngozi Nwabueze, Lauren Jordan, John Harp, and Cori Young.  The West Feliciana Reading Council said that they are so proud of each one of these talented students and hope they will continue with their love for the written word.
