Axel MacKinnon and Asher Nichols were Principals of the Day at Bains Lower Elementary School as a reward for earning 90 Accelerated Reader points so far this school year. Dressed to the nine’s with their own walkie-talkies, Axel and Asher proudly patrolled the halls of Bains Lower on Friday, February 15.
The Accelerated Reader program rewards students for reaching milestones in their reading with things like gift cards, pizza and prizes. The reward for reaching 90 points is to be the principal for one day. Both avid little readers and both students in Mrs. Viguerie’s first grade class, Asher and Axel reached 90 points at the same time.
“We read three books every day in class instead of just one and we read chapter books and we read at home too,” said Asher.
As principals, the boys started off the day by checking the school building, watching children load busses to leave for a field trip and observing each classroom. After ordering lunch from Subway, because as Principal Square said ‘that’s what we do on Fridays,’ the boys continued their special day as principals.
“We went in all the classrooms. We saw that they were doing a good job with reading and that everybody was safe. The teachers were doing what they were supposed to be doing. I took a lot of notes,” said Axel.
The boys enticed other students to read books by telling them about all the fun things they were able to do as principals.
Mrs. Viguerie said, “Every morning after they finish their journals, they each read three books and then take AR tests on the iPad independently. Then they help others take their own AR tests. These two boys are just very good role models and their actions are motivating the rest of the class, so it is all very positive.”
With no signs of slowing down, the boys have already scoped out the prize booth for the rewards they have to look forward to next.
